Village Life

The good news of the week is that the wasps are no more – the man in the white van  turned up on Friday afternoon and sprayed his white powder and 15 minutes later said they were all ex-wasps. Hooray! Life can return to normal once more. No more noises in the bedroom ceiling…

There are not enough hours in the day for all the things we want to do. It was fine weather last week so we spent some time cleaning the house, sorting out the kitchen and trying to set up a work bench in the shed. You can’t do anything without a bench, can you? So, satisfying for us, but not very interesting for anyone else.

So here are some pics of round about….

The maypole erected at midsummer – time takes its toll

Every midsummer the village residents decorate the maypole with local wild flowers and birch leaves. It looks really beautiful when it’s done. In the afternoon of midsummer’s eve there’s dancing round the maypole with traditional songs and the timeless music of an accordion player. It’s as big a festival as Christmas in other parts of the world. By this time of year, it’s looking a bit sad. I’m not sure when it gets taken down, I expect we will find out in due course.

Brännbol (rounders) on a summer evening

Often in this place it seems like you’re the only people on earth. If you want evidence to the contrary, go to the Ronneby Loppis (Flea Market) which is held every Sunday from April to October. It is packed every week. It’s hard to resist buying something. W always finds some beautiful pieces of old top-quality material  which she puts to good use. Did I mention that PK (remember the Honda Concerto?) has a CD player (yes accessories too). So we needed some CDs to play in it didn’t we? I picked up Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits and Motown Classics for a couple of kronor. Now we’re really motoring.

Award-winning hot dog

One evening we were invited by our friends that we’d met at brännbol to their house by the sea in the archipelago. It’s on a little island which you can walk or cycle onto, but there’s no bridge for traffic.

The path to the island

So you park the car and walk a couple of hundred metres and there you are – it’s totally stunning. Yes I know, it must be tricky when you’ve got a week’s shopping. But hey, grab the wheelbarrow.

Darkness falls – eventually

Well that’s a taste of life on the edge of the forest.

We’re still not totally full bottle with this program. It takes ages to upload the photos, especially from the SLR. I uploaded a load more just now and they seem to have disappeared. Grrrr! bloody computers. Well I’m certainly not going looking for them now. They will have to wait till next time.

Thank you all very much for your comments. We had decided to not have comments in future posts, but by popular demand comments will be allowed again! If we can work out how, that is.

The Olympics are on all day on STV1. Now that the athletics are on, we get to see most events regardless of who it is. I see we (Oz) haven’t been doing too well so far. Whereas they (team GB) have been winning gold medals right, left and centre. Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah especially were brilliant I thought. But we have Sally Pearson this evening in the 110 hurdles, she is brilliant too, would be great if she could win gold.

We’d better get on with all the jobs that wait – there’s the sewing machine to work out, the mozzie frames to make for the windows, all the peeling windows that need stripping and re-painting. Hmmm I wonder if that chimney man is going to ring this week, it is week 32 after all…

About shearwood

A few years ago we retired to the south-west region of Western Australia, a peaceful corner of the world. It does get a bit cold, wet and windy in the winter, so in the northern hemisphere summer we love to travel to places both familiar and new, usually to northern Europe or Japan.
